Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) this morning announced plans of bringing Xbox Game Pass to Samsung Smart TVs. Shares of the juggernaut are roughly flat on Thursday.
Xbox app will be launched on June 30th
As of June 30th, users in 27 countries will be able to access the subscription gaming service on their Samsung 2022 Smart TV, even without the Xbox console. Discussing the upcoming app on CNBC’s “The Exchange”, Loop Ventures’ Doug Clinton said:
Microsoft, more than any other company in gaming, is changing the nature of the business by combining hardware, in the cloud, with great content they’ll have with Bethesda and Activision. They’ve married the two worlds perfectly.
Eventually, the tech behemoth will launch the Xbox app on Smart TVs from other manufacturers as well. Last week, Microsoft lowered its Q4 outlook citing “exchange rate”.
The challenge for Sony and other competitors
According to Clinton, the launch of Xbox Game Pass on Smart TVs gives a significant edge to Microsoft over its rivals in the gaming space, including Sony and Nintendo. He noted:
The challenge for competitors is having enough breadth of content to compete. If Sony and others want to compete, they have to think about going into the market and acquiring one of these mid to small sized publishers.
The Loop Ventures’ expert dubs gaming a “counter cyclical” segment of the equity market that will continue to do well with or without a recession. MSFT is down nearly 20% for the year.
