Weekly wrap: Trump missing Nobel Peace Prize, UK PM’s India visit, AMD-OpenAI deal and more

by October 12, 2025
by October 12, 2025

From a new US-China trade flare-up to an unexpected Nobel twist, this week was packed with major global headlines.

President Trump slapped a 100% tariff on Chinese imports, Venezuela’s María Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, Israel and Hamas agreed to a fragile ceasefire, AMD partnered with OpenAI, and the UK-India relationship got a major boost.

A glance at major developments this week.

US imposes additional 100% tariffs on China

In a move that shook the global markets on Friday, US President Donald Trump ramped up the trade war with China, announcing a massive 100% tariff on all Chinese imports.

The new duties will kick in on November 1, or even earlier if Beijing doesn’t back down from what Trump called its “aggressive trade actions.”

This fresh round of tariffs stacks on top of the existing 30%, pushing the total tariff burden to around 130% on Chinese goods.

Trump said the decision was a direct response to China’s new export controls on rare earth minerals and critical software, which he blasted as “hostile” and a “moral disgrace” in global trade.

The tariffs will hit a wide range of Chinese exports and come alongside upcoming US export restrictions on key software technologies.

With both sides tightening their trade screws, the move could further strain US-China relations, especially with their leaders scheduled to meet at the APEC Summit in South Korea in just a few days.

Trump misses out on 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has gone to María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader known for her relentless fight to restore democracy in her country.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her as a “courageous champion of peace and democracy” who has continued her work even while in hiding from the Maduro regime.

Machado’s win is historic; she’s now the second Venezuelan ever to receive a Nobel Prize.

But the announcement also came with a bit of political drama.

Machado dedicated her award to US President Donald Trump, who’s been openly campaigning for a Nobel Peace Prize himself, claiming credit for helping end several global conflicts.

Trump quickly thanked her for the gesture, but, once again, did not win the prize.

The committee, without naming names, seemed to throw a little shade, reiterating that the Nobel Peace Prize rewards genuine peacebuilding, not political self-promotion.

Interestingly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also backed Trump’s bid for the honor, adding another twist to an already headline-grabbing Nobel season.

Israel-Hamas truce marks hope for peace

A long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas officially took effect on Friday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet signed off on a deal brokered by US President Donald Trump.

The agreement is being called the first major step in a broader peace plan aimed at finally ending the two-year conflict in Gaza.

Under the deal, Israeli forces have pulled back to pre-designated positions inside Gaza, while Hamas has agreed to release all remaining Israeli hostages within 72 hours.

In return, Israel will free about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The truce also allows humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza, easing the severe shortages that civilians have been facing.

AMD-OpenAI deal

AMD and OpenAI have teamed up in a major new multi-year partnership announced in 2025, and it’s a big deal for the tech world.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will deploy a massive 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs to power its next generation of AI infrastructure.

The rollout kicks off in the second half of 2026, starting with AMD’s Instinct MI450 series chips. For AMD, this is a bold move to take on Nvidia’s dominance in the AI hardware space, and it could seriously shake up the market.

As part of the deal, OpenAI will get warrants to buy up to 10% of AMD’s stock, depending on how quickly they hit their deployment goals.

Beyond the hardware, the two companies are also deepening their software collaboration, working closely to optimize performance and scalability across OpenAI’s systems.

Starmer pushes UK-India ties forward

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrapped up his first official visit to India on Thursday, with a clear goal: to take UK-India trade and strategic relations to the next level.

Traveling with a powerhouse delegation of over 125 business leaders, Starmer focused on speeding up the rollout of the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which was signed back in July.

During the trip, Starmer and Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the stage at Mumbai’s Global Fintech Fest, highlighting both nations’ shared vision for innovation, technology, and climate cooperation.

Some major outcomes came out of the visit: commitments to create over 10,000 new UK jobs through Indian investments, joint projects in AI and critical minerals, and a renewed pledge to strengthen the India-UK strategic partnership through 2035.
